A Firesign Chat

||||||||| Catherwood re-enters the Waiting Room and explains "This is the main discussion room which is logged each night."
||||||||| Catherwood announces, "The time is 4:33 AM - I now declare Thursday's chat log for September 25, 2003 officially open!"... and then, he retires back to the vestibule...
||||||||| Catherwood strides in with a trumpet, plays a fanfare, and proclaims "Nine PM on Thursday, September 25, 2003 - I now declare alt.comedy.firesgn-thtre's chat officially open!" -- then he looks around at the empty room, looks at his watch, and mumbles "...am I early?"
||||||||| Merlyn enters at 9:13 PM as Catherwood takes their hat and goat and runs off to the Haberdashery Barn.
Merlyn: Come back here with my goat!
||||||||| Catherwood ushers llanwydd into the room, accepts a grimy quarter as a gratuity, mumbles something about 9:15 PM, then departs.
llanwydd: howdy merl
Merlyn: hello
Merlyn: kind of a slow start so far...
llanwydd: its just starting now
Merlyn: the future?
llanwydd: the future'
llanwydd: well the future's not here yet man
llanwydd: I said live it or live with it
Merlyn: on phone..back in a few
llanwydd: wish I could do that. On the phone and online both at once
llanwydd: brb
llanwydd: a moose once bit my sister
||||||||| 9:24 PM: Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong jumps out of the hall closet saying "I've been listening to all of you talking about me for the past hour!"
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Evening Folks
llanwydd: hi Dex. Merlyn's on the phone
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: that must be uncomfortable
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong wonders where all the usual suspects are
llanwydd: Maybe Merl should get on the do-not-call list
llanwydd: those telemarketers can really disrupt a chat
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Like to play poker with those on the do not call list
llanwydd: I hate to say it (in a way) but the way to really stop them is just to be as rude as you can.
llanwydd: legislation won't do it
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Kinda like "Hello? Fuck off!!!
llanwydd: that's the idea
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: If you had caller ID, could you call them back and bust their chops
llanwydd: in most cases I like to be polite though
Merlyn: I'm bach - da da da DUMMM!
Merlyn: wrong symphony
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Sounds more like Beethoven
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Let's share that fifth
llanwydd: very often caller ID won't work with them
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Too bad
Merlyn: ok dex, why is cable a heartbreak? I saw your little solliliquoy a couple of days ago
||||||||| Catherwood strides up and snorts derisively "Presenting 'Dave', just granted probation at 9:33 PM", then leaves hurriedly.
llanwydd: hey dave
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Ah Merl.....Apparently my os (Windows ME) has a lot of issues with broadband connectivity
Dave: "I've got a mind to give up living, and go shopping instead" Paul Butterfield
Dave: good evening all
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Hiya Dave
llanwydd: evening some
Merlyn: ah, ok. Hi dave
Dave: heya friends!
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: M: I'm on my wife's laptop which is wireless cable and has *no* damn issues
Merlyn: on your wife's lap? zowie!
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Lot more comfortable than being on the phone =)
||||||||| Catherwood steals into the room, and intones "Announcing 'Regular Boinkland', also known as 'Nancy' -- the time is 9:37 PM" -- then he slowly retires back into the vestibule...
Regular Boinkland: Hello All.
llanwydd: hey boink
Regular Boinkland: Where'd all the kids go?
Dave: boinkboink
Regular Boinkland: Davedave
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Hey Regular...you got any of that weed the boys were smoking when they dissapeared the high school
Regular Boinkland: Yes I have this road apple red that david thought he had hidden from me ...
llanwydd: when the high school disappeared?
||||||||| Catherwood enters with Bone-E-Boi close behind, mutters something about disrupting his 9:40 PM tree-stunting plans, and runs off to the Aviary.
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Yeah Ilan: Stacked up and labeled and everything
Regular Boinkland: Bone!
llanwydd: how do bone
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Oh Boi!
Dave: guess I don't have to graduate now, it's all gone
Bone-E-Boi: Regular Boinkland?
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Dave: A handsome simulfax of your diploma will be sent to you
llanwydd: hope you've got a flute to play
Regular Boinkland: When I graduate I'm going to cut the soles off my shoes, sit in a tree and loearn to play the flute!
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Yanni!!!!
Merlyn: I think they did that in "American Pie
Merlyn: I won't be here in 2 weeks, I'll be on a plane to London, but I'll try to log in early and say something
Regular Boinkland: Naw it was in "In the next world you're on your own,
Regular Boinkland: Merl you're flying to London Kentucky?
llanwydd: wonder if there are any Fireheads in London
||||||||| Regular Boinkland departs at 9:43 PM, singing "Toad away, toad away; toad away, toad away! Where do you go when you're toad away?"
Merlyn: the website gets a few hits from england, but not a lot...
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: hE LEFT BEFORE HIS QUESTION WAS (ooops) answered
||||||||| Catherwood leads klokwk-not-dawg inside, makes a note of the time (9:44 PM), then fades off into the distance going on about the waiting room or the sitting room or something.
||||||||| Catherwood enters with Regular Boinkland close behind, mutters something about disrupting his 9:44 PM tree-stunting plans, and runs off to the Aviary.
Dave: I've actually got a phife somewhere, and have fun in London Brian, you're lucky, I've always wanted to go to the UK
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Hey KDog
llanwydd: howdy klok
Merlyn: I was there about 25 years ago
klokwk-not-dawg: yes, hi
Regular Boinkland: Klowk!
llanwydd: I was there in 84
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Lots has changed Merl, for one thing, Irishers not blowing up everything
Merlyn: 1979 for me
klokwk-not-dawg: ennio morricone is playing there Sunday night. somewhere in London; forget where
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Klok: Who's he playing?
Bone-E-Boi: phish with a phife.
klokwk-not-dawg: Dex - Manchester United, I think
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Speaking of playing, I had a wonderful music weekend: saw Keith Jarrett trio Fri night, first row center, Carnegie Hall, and saw Mighty Wind Players at Town Hall on Sat night
klokwk-not-dawg: they're doing their version of Radiohead, maybe, at halftime?
Bone-E-Boi: Who's he playing? The body electric?
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Catch Pickerel with a piccolo
llanwydd: I saw FST at Town Hall once
Regular Boinkland: I got second row tickets to Meatloaf on Saturday.
Dave: wow Dex, that must've been incredible, I don't have any Jerrit recordings
klokwk-not-dawg: Dex - some acoustician was on WPKN on Wed. and said to sit slightly off-axis in Carnegie for best sound ;-) So, did you hum along with Keith?
llanwydd: you have to buy tickets for meatloaf?
llanwydd: what is this 1944?
Regular Boinkland: No they were a gift.
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Klok: He was fairly restrained in that aspect, although it has never bothered me
klokwk-not-dawg: no, that's coupons, Ilan...
Dave: I saw Ben Harper for free at red rocks about a month ago, awesome if you dig his music
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Anybody got any greize coupons?
klokwk-not-dawg: have they finally sanitized Red Rocks after John Tesh?
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Klok: They ran white noise through the speakers at stupidly loud levels
llanwydd: how do you do that italics thing, klok? Wonder if my keyboard does that?
Regular Boinkland: Mrs. Shirley Yamamoto of camp #13 crochet her entire months allotment of garbage into a splendid barage ballon ...
Dave: don't know Klok, never heard of anything about Tesh
Dave: hell I've never heard his music
klokwk-not-dawg: most HTML constructs seem to work, Ilan
Bone-E-Boi: Organ Leroy is playing with his electric eel again....
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Wow, that Shirley, first a ballon, now a ballon
llanwydd: I've got webtv
Merlyn: I deny everything
klokwk-not-dawg: you haven't missed anything, Dave. Beware and stay away. Stick to something less noxious, like methamphetamines... ;-)
Regular Boinkland: Test
Merlyn: the rabbit died
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: They're still mining that methamphet?

klokwk-not-dawg: Ilan - HTML is a way of coding web pages. It's what you type, not what you have to show the chat
llanwydd: ðß©ðß
Dave: sure Klok, will keep that in mind
llanwydd: well i tried
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: kewl
klokwk-not-dawg: Italics for example are started by an 'i' enclosed in a pair of angle brackets and stopped by a '/i' in another pair. Everything you type in between ends up as italics on peoples' browser display
Merlyn: just press the ? in your bottom frame for the chat FAQ
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: like this/I
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: uhoh
klokwk-not-dawg: it does not matter if you type it in Web TV or on a regular computer. And listen to Merlyn, who is all-wise ;-)
Regular Boinkland: You mean like THIS
Merlyn: no, more <i>like this</i>
llanwydd: [i]
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: gotcha
Bone-E-Boi: Does one see the HTML in the transcript posted to the newsgroup?
klokwk-not-dawg: now you did it!! I'm having another one of my seizu
Merlyn: no, the HTML gets stripped out, and it tries to translate the special characters
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Seizu? Ah eating sushi again, eh?
Regular Boinkland: Grubs again grumble grumble ...
klokwk-not-dawg: Merlyn - are you going to add the Unicode proposed extension plane for Klingon characters?
llanwydd: one more try
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Well done Ilan
klokwk-not-dawg: if at first you don't succeed...
Regular Boinkland: Methinks you got it Il!
llanwydd: there it is!!!

Merlyn: only if people start speaking it
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: We all got it....it's contagious
klokwk-not-dawg: please be sure to balance your on and off tags!
Dave: I don't
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: and your checkbood
llanwydd: testing
Dave: kind of like, "YES, WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT, ... I'm not"
klokwk-not-dawg: that's why we get 5 posts in italics, then
klokwk-not-dawg: because if you don't, it ends up like this
Merlyn: the code tries to close off unbalanced tags, but it can't always figure it out
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: hmm
klokwk-not-dawg: really?
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: It is a simple head code
||||||||| Catherwood enters the room, strikes a gong, and bellows "THE TIME IN NEW YORK IS 10 O'CLOCK", then silently exits.
Regular Boinkland: Any English school boy could catch it then?
klokwk-not-dawg: i see Catherwood is on speed again
Dave: give it head
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: precisely
klokwk-not-dawg: good article today in NYT Technology about the guy in charge of Unicode standard
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Yeah saw it, Klok
klokwk-not-dawg: also about people making real cockpit mock-ups for their Microsoft Flight Stimulator
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Makes you wanna type in tagalog
llanwydd: or tamil
klokwk-not-dawg: as long as they provide a thai charset
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: I'm into stealing real cars now that I'm playing Grand Theft, AUTO
Regular Boinkland: Oooooh hangings to good for you Klock!
Merlyn: I've completed GTA3 and GTA:VC
klokwk-not-dawg: i went to alan cox's blog today, but it seems to have changed over to Welsh
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Sounds like a job for Ilan
llanwydd: welsh is tough to learn
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong goes italic for a drink
klokwk-not-dawg: yeah, someone ought to run a translation thread; he's #2 guy on Linux kernel mods -- there might be something important there
Merlyn: I don't know if the chat will be auto-posted, the mit.edu news2mail seems to be down for a while...
klokwk-not-dawg: yeah, try learning Hopi
llanwydd: hopi springs eternal
Regular Boinkland: Chakta issa noosta ...
klokwk-not-dawg: only for worf and sapir...
klokwk-not-dawg: oops whorf
Dave: internet jargin is just like music theory, it doesn't make sense
Regular Boinkland: Wharf?
klokwk-not-dawg: at least that was their hypothesis...
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Warp and whoof Dawg
Merlyn: I've completed GTA3 and GTA:VC
Regular Boinkland: I'm working on Tiger Woods 2004!
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Merl: lol good for you =)
klokwk-not-dawg: you must be a real wreck, Merlyn
Merlyn: hmm, that was really odd...that's a repeated msg instead of what I typed. Other people have reported that happening before
klokwk-not-dawg: it's happening all over again, eh?
Merlyn: look it up in the encyclopædia
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Merl: It was funny, don't question it
Regular Boinkland: Ghost in the workds Merl?
klokwk-not-dawg: the French have 39 different phrases for that, Merlyn
klokwk-not-dawg: (bill) bill geist ex-machina?
llanwydd: geist im arbeit
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Klok: The French have 39 phrases for " Look it up in the encyclopaedia?
Merlyn: I had done a lot of typing and backspacing...I can't tell if the browser or the code screwed up
klokwk-not-dawg: Arbeit macht Volkswagens!
Regular Boinkland: No Il work makes you tired!
Merlyn: Ha! You didn't notice I used the "æ" single glyph!
klokwk-not-dawg: I did. Showoff
Regular Boinkland: Show off! Throw a towel over it ...
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Ha! Did too..just don't know how to duplicate it
Merlyn: well, copy & paste it if you can't type it
klokwk-not-dawg: I don't have that same ¥
klokwk-not-dawg: it's scrolled off now
Merlyn: Å møøse onçe bît my sïstér...
Regular Boinkland: What about ß*©*°¬¬……*…*ø¨¥Ý¥Ý®´*¡™£¢*§¶•ª•º–?
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: run the sentences untill reals the mind
Merlyn: most of that will translate into ASCII versions
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: An Elk once bought me a drink
klokwk-not-dawg: there are several ways - one is to use the extended character code; another (probably safer) is to type the HTML code for the character
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Type Engrish tloop
Regular Boinkland: Engrish you Japanese house wife?

Merlyn: the keyboard codes work well enough, if the code can guess which set you're using
Merlyn: tables are Right Out
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: I'm using a crystal set
klokwk-not-dawg: dinner for eight and only seven spoons, Dex?
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Just pulled some of my cats wiskers out
Merlyn: if you type the mnemonic (as opposed to the numeric) HTML version of a character, the ascii chat log won't translate it
klokwk-not-dawg: oh, BTW, how is cable working out for you, Ash? ;-))
Regular Boinkland: They hate that dex!
Regular Boinkland: Cable heap good Kemosabe!
klokwk-not-dawg: it's much simpler, over the long run, to teach them how to shave, Dex. I heard Vonnegut taught his cat to use the commode, but that may be apocryphal
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Klok: Right now, I'm on my wife's laptop which is wireless cable and does just fine...my machine which uses Windows ME has issues with broadband
Regular Boinkland: Dex I have Issues to publish right now ... Mr. Birdseed Go To Press! Peace Y'all!
klokwk-not-dawg: no problems with 98 or XP; don't know about ME
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Night UE
llanwydd: I don't get the broad band on my shortwave
klokwk-not-dawg: nite Boinkl
||||||||| Regular Boinkland is defenestrated just as the clock strikes 10:18 PM.
Merlyn: by the way, if people want to hear Harpo's voice, go here: http://www.marx-brothers.org/living/harposp.htm
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong thinks prolly the Dixie chicks are the best broadband
klokwk-not-dawg: LOL
||||||||| Catherwood strides up and snorts derisively "Presenting 'Dr. Headphones', just granted probation at 10:19 PM", then leaves hurriedly.
klokwk-not-dawg: hi ken
Dr. Headphones: hello, dear friends
llanwydd: I checked that out already. Fascinating! I love Harpo
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Hey Kend^
Dave: hey there Ken
Dr. Headphones: how's life treating everyone tonight?
llanwydd: By the way I read his autobiography, "Harpo Speaks", long ago
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Harpo Plucks was better
klokwk-not-dawg: viaduct
Bone-E-Boi: [image]>http://www.sito.org/id/tca/un.gif">[image]
Dr. Headphones: vi not?
Merlyn: just post a link, BEB
Merlyn: pictures in the stream ain't pretty, they screw it up worse than tables
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: AMRAD?
llanwydd: is not sure I understand you fully
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Amrad = American Radical
Bone-E-Boi: http://www.sito.org/id/tca/un.gif
Bone-E-Boi: Art of the Insane.
llanwydd: At My Rest After Dinner
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Selling Brooms made by Insane Artists
Dr. Headphones: lots of insane people try art
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Red Brooms for instance
Merlyn: looks like harpo
Merlyn: or mary tyler moore with her hair bleached
Dr. Headphones: and harps like look-o
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Mister Graaaaant
Bone-E-Boi: Bill Gates on bad designer chemicals.
Dr. Headphones: anyone hear from roto/dave lately? i wonder if he ever got power back?
llanwydd: That is a hideous drawing
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Ken: Isn't Roto in the Dc Area? Wonder if Isabel got him
klokwk-not-dawg: i saw pictures of Hatteras Village -- looked like someone had at it with a giant cultivator rake
llanwydd: Harpo never looked that bad
Dr. Headphones: yep, dex, that's why i ask. i've sent several emails, no reply
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: or sounded so quiet
llanwydd: and I hope Mary never did
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Ken: Still a lotta people down in that area without power
Bone-E-Boi: That's the best drawing I've done in 23 years and you call it horrible.
Dr. Headphones: i am powerless, but that's a personal problem, not one with electricity
llanwydd: You did it? Sorry
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: BEB: See you're getting better, mentally that is
Dr. Headphones: "you're not getting older, you're getting better"
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: You're not getting older, you're just getting less insane
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: "less Insane, partially responsible"
Dr. Headphones: so, dex, i hope you like speed :)
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Is this related to the methamphat mining scandal?
Bone-E-Boi: http://austin.weblogger.com/2002/11/13 I wonder if Billy Flanigan would call it horrible.
Dr. Headphones: my cable company is giving me the "heroin" treatment. you know, "first one's free". i signed up for the 256k level, they are giving me the 2m speed now for 6 months, "just to try it out". i love it totally. just started yesterday
klokwk-not-dawg: mine has no such speed grades to give, so gave me premium cable until they realized I wasn't going to ever order it and cut me off
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: BEB: Looks like a 6-8-6 American Locomotive Syracuse Special
Dr. Headphones: that's after having the slower fast stuff for 6 months
klokwk-not-dawg: so now, if the modem goes out and I call up and they ask, "can you see TV?", I can honestly say, "no..."
klokwk-not-dawg: what, they think I'm going to pay $$$ to watch the O'Reilly Youth show?
llanwydd: what can I say for it? It has a lot of color
Bone-E-Boi: Jesus on locomotive. I think Phil Austin did that.
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Radar O'Reilly has his own show now?
Dr. Headphones: ha! i get $5 off my cable modem for having digital cable tv, which incidentally costs $5 more than the plain vanilla stuff
llanwydd: what's the O'Reilly Youth Show?
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Ken: A fair wxchange is no bargain
klokwk-not-dawg: 2-4-2 is best. Take it from me -- I'm a senior salesman for the Baldwin Locomotive Works.
klokwk-not-dawg: yeah? i get $10 off my cable modem for having digital telephone -- which is $1 less than Verizon's
Dr. Headphones: i dont' like fair exchanges. those carnies always get the best of me
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Klok: =))))Somehow I knew you'd weigh in with a typical en pointe comment
llanwydd: that reminds me. I'm rereading "Atlas Shrugged". Skimming, more like
klokwk-not-dawg: i always got cheated at the fair...
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Ilan: At the risk etc....why?
klokwk-not-dawg: what? Ilan -- you're planning to be a disciple of Alan Greenspan?
llanwydd: no fare to anyone
Dr. Headphones: llan: that's a life's work given the length of it
llanwydd: not quite
Dr. Headphones: is that the one about john galt?
llanwydd: yes it is
klokwk-not-dawg: Stephenson's prequel, part 1, to Cryptonomicon just came out, and it's nearly 1K pages
Dr. Headphones: that's the only one of hers i ever read. after that one, no desire to start another
llanwydd: the one about the virtue of selfish capitalism and the evil of charity
Dr. Headphones: klok: i read "crypt" on your recommendation, liked it
llanwydd: fun story but I don't like the idea overall
Dr. Headphones: i see some good parts of that entire way of viewing the world, but if forced to accept or reject it all in toto i would reject it
klokwk-not-dawg: still seizures from the blinking text earlier. must...reheat...pizza...BRB
Merlyn: whew! My login was destroyed for a few minutes, but it's back now
Merlyn: not this login, my unix login
llanwydd: Basically, I believe in compassion. Seeing that some people cannot be productive
Dr. Headphones: try the unisex login, works either way
Dr. Headphones: yes to compassion. no to bush's version of it
llanwydd: but be as productive as you can
Dr. Headphones: be all that you can be...in the army!
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Think outside the box....work in the box
llanwydd: I can't deal with his idea of "Iraqi Freedom"
Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong: Well, Dear Friends, time to play alternate side parking...will rejoin later if successful
Merlyn: will you trade what your thinking outside the box for the curtain carol merrill is standing by?
llanwydd: syl
Merlyn: don't all type at once...
klokwk-not-dawg: nobody can
klokwk-not-dawg: good luck dex
Merlyn: how can you type in two places at once?
klokwk-not-dawg: Northgate multithreaded keyboar
klokwk-not-dawg: d
klokwk-not-dawg: some minor character loss may occur during load pea
Merlyn: here's a good keyboard: http://gmfiles.iwarp.com/keytronic/keytronic.htm
klokwk-not-dawg: northgate omnikey 102 was the apex of the art
llanwydd: going to grab a bite. brb
Dr. Headphones: klok: what was so special about it? i've heard others say that before also
klokwk-not-dawg: http://www.cvtinc.com/products/keyboards/stellar.htm
klokwk-not-dawg: very solid, Ken. metal base
Bone-E-Boi: Clowns with knives. Billy Flanigan likes those.
klokwk-not-dawg: configurable
klokwk-not-dawg: set a switch and pull the keycaps and you can put CTRL where lesser kbds have Caps Lock
||||||||| Bone-E-Boi leaves to catch the 10:55 PM train to Hellmouth.
klokwk-not-dawg: and ALT where they have CTRL. And Caps Lock in arthritic finger never-never land where it belongs
Dr. Headphones: hmmm, sounds like recipe for disaster. i know where they are now and that would throw me off the trail
klokwk-not-dawg: well, if you learned to computer-type (as opposed to underwood-type) on an ASR-33 teletype, it's the way God wanted keyboards to be
klokwk-not-dawg: much less arm motion, unless you do Caps Lock a lot ;-)
klokwk-not-dawg: i have programs and setups for Win and Linux to move the keys around...
klokwk-not-dawg: but Northgate included new key caps for this change; since the caps are sculpted for particular rows, you can't just move the delivered ones around
Dr. Headphones: i learned on manual typewriter, when "return" was actually that!
Dr. Headphones: but no button for it, you threw your left hand up in the air and swiped it right real hard
klokwk-not-dawg: me too
||||||||| It's 11:00 PM, and that means it's time to play BEAT THE REAPER! And here's how our contestants did:
||||||||| Dexter-Cable-is-a-heartbreak-Fong - dead from the common cold
||||||||| llanwydd - dead from the common cold
||||||||| Better luck next time! And now, back to our chatroom, which is already in progress...
Dr. Headphones: i've never typed on a teletype, only used the "receive only" models
klokwk-not-dawg: and the shift lock was NOT next to the 'a' key. that happened because IBM didn't want the PC to supplant their expensive Displaywriter composing typewriter product, supposedly, so the PC keyboard was crippled
||||||||| Catherwood enters the room, strikes a gong, and bellows "THE TIME IN NEW YORK IS 11 O'CLOCK", then silently exits.
Dr. Headphones: catherwood is up to 13 minutes fast now
klokwk-not-dawg: well, it was an exciting experience, Ken ;-)
Dr. Headphones: someone smack him up side the head
Merlyn: which makes it the most backward of backward compatible
klokwk-not-dawg: he's accelerating!
klokwk-not-dawg: teletype had very long carriage return time, longer than 110 baud speed. so the convention was that carriage return always precede line feed
Dr. Headphones: as long as he's not accelerating at -9.8m/s/s we're safe
Merlyn: what does that help, KWG?
Dr. Headphones: i remember my radio station days when sometimes they remembered the CR but forgot the LF. that makes for an interesting news cast if you haven't read it ahead of time
klokwk-not-dawg: and that is why code still has CRLF sequence in that order
Merlyn: just more time for the head to return?
klokwk-not-dawg: well, if you did line feed, then carriage return, the carriage would still be moving back when the next character code came into the rotor, and there was no lockout. i forget whether it printed on the fly or just got lost
Merlyn: you can still configure stty to print null characters for padding after c/r or l/f, etc
klokwk-not-dawg: it's one of those things like the "printer on fire" error signal whose origin goes way back to other times
Dr. Headphones: i actually owned a tty unit once. bought at hamfest for $10, sat in garage for years without being hooked up. finally sold it for $25 to guy who later told me it was a rare model he needed for parts, he would have paid up to $100
Merlyn: I used TTYs and paper tape and punch cards
klokwk-not-dawg: asr 33 could keep up with just one character code padding, so line feed (which didn't print anything and worked via a separate ratchet scheme to the platen) was a safe choice
Dr. Headphones: i've done the punch card thing. still have a 2/3 full box of 5000 somewhere in the basement....
klokwk-not-dawg: stuff like the baudot asr 35 and such the wire services used (the 33 was a piece of junk), i don't know what padding they needed.
Merlyn: I think I remember some TTYs printing a character as the head was returning if you didn't pad C/Rs
klokwk-not-dawg: oh, the 33s could jam up just printing in the middle of a line, so it was best not to provoke them ;--)
||||||||| Catherwood steals into the room, and intones "Announcing 'Mudhead', also known as 'Nancy' -- the time is 11:08 PM" -- then he slowly retires back into the vestibule...
klokwk-not-dawg: but i never had one catch fire
Dr. Headphones: hey mud
Dr. Headphones: i first leaned "ctrl-g" from the teletype :)
Merlyn: I think the 6805 had a HCF opcode - halt and catch fire (really a test mode that required a power reset to recover from)
Mudhead: hey
Dr. Headphones: better known in computers as "bell"
||||||||| "11:09 PM? 11:09 PM!!" says Catherwood, "llanwydd should be here by now...oh, THERE you are!" as llanwydd enters and sits on the couch.
Merlyn: but I used Z-80s mostly
klokwk-not-dawg: betcha that rang your bell
Mudhead: Oh
Merlyn: now bell is really in C as /a (I think) for 'alarm' or something
Merlyn: I mean \a
Mudhead: Are you still living in the past, the futures where the fairs at boyz.
Dr. Headphones: not sure, merl, but i know in yahoo messenger, ctrl-g still does a bell
Dr. Headphones: mud: the past is more fun, i know how it turns out :)
||||||||| Catherwood enters with Dexter-Parking-was-easy-Cable's-still a heartbreak-Fong close behind, mutters something about disrupting his 11:10 PM tree-stunting plans, and runs off to the Aviary.
Merlyn: do teletubbies use teletypes?
Dr. Headphones: the model "Q" perhaps?
Mudhead: I'm turning left, my signal bells ringing
Merlyn: I remember when 300 baud CRTs seemed fast
Dexter-Parking-was-easy-Cable's-still a heartbreak-Fong: Hi Mud
klokwk-not-dawg: the 68xx series had a bunch of unused op codes that mapped to some interesting operations. Motorola insisted that people not use them, but many did. The worst such was when Mickeysoft used unused interrupt that Intel had reserved. They later used it for something signifcant in the 80186 CPU and all manner of MS code broke. In the end, it was Intel who blinked and re-designed
Mudhead: must be good stuff, theres a ringing in my ears
Dr. Headphones: hello?
klokwk-not-dawg: you rang?
Merlyn: what idiots...
Dexter-Parking-was-easy-Cable's-still a heartbreak-Fong: I want to order an anchovy to go and hold the pizza
Merlyn: I'm not getting any ringing, but it's probably a browser thing
Merlyn: I'm sure it's re-ringing on every refresh
Mudhead: Here, thers a little left in the can
Merlyn: so type stuff to scroll the ringing off the page
Dexter-Parking-was-easy-Cable's-still a heartbreak-Fong: Med: All anchovys are little
Dexter-Parking-was-easy-Cable's-still a heartbreak-Fong: Mud:
Mudhead: what?
Dr. Headphones: i don't think browsers interpret the "bell" ascii code as a sound
Dexter-Parking-was-easy-Cable's-still a heartbreak-Fong: Mud: Just correcting mispelling of your name
Mudhead: Im behind in the bar
Dexter-Parking-was-easy-Cable's-still a heartbreak-Fong: Then drink up
Dr. Headphones: does anyone still order harvey wallbangers?
klokwk-not-dawg: browsers have 39 interpretations for "bell"?
Dexter-Parking-was-easy-Cable's-still a heartbreak-Fong: I ordered him to stop banging the wall
Dr. Headphones: speaking of which, i have never heard art bell. am i the only one in america who can honestly say that?
Mudhead: and thats a cap lock key
klokwk-not-dawg: i finally heard him in 2001
Merlyn: did anyone get a ringing from their browser?
Dr. Headphones: i thought about cap lock, but i'd have to drill a hole in my head to attach the hasp
klokwk-not-dawg: immediately gave up all my possessions and started walking to Indiana
Merlyn: get knitted klein bottle hats at www.kleinbottle.com
klokwk-not-dawg: i thought about it, too, ken, but it would interfere with my aluminum foil deflector beanie
Dr. Headphones: "hasp" is one of those words that, when said aloud very fast and repeatedly, sounds wrong
Merlyn: sounds like your astmatic
klokwk-not-dawg: you shouldn't do it in front of cats...
Dr. Headphones: no, i'm a kraftmatic kind of guy :)
Mudhead: lol
Merlyn: try it with "hummanna"
Merlyn: then you sound like ralph kramden
Dr. Headphones: who you talking about "yo mama"?
Dexter-Parking-was-easy-Cable's-still a heartbreak-Fong: Merl: Like to see those Klein bottle guys start a line of Bongs =))
Dr. Headphones: dex: never get high but the world would feel better
Merlyn: if you can design it...
Dexter-Parking-was-easy-Cable's-still a heartbreak-Fong: Ken: lol
klokwk-not-dawg: they will run away...
Merlyn: klein bongles
Merlyn: bongles the mind
Dr. Headphones: i haven't used bong in years. probably still have one somewhere in box in basement
Dexter-Parking-was-easy-Cable's-still a heartbreak-Fong: run away....run away

Dexter-Parking-was-easy-Cable's-still a heartbreak-Fong: That's all we need to know...Kend^, you're under arrest
klokwk-not-dawg: this whole chat is a sting!
Dr. Headphones: dex: i moved to michigan over 15 years ago, still have unpacked boxes from that move. i guess the stuff in them isn't *real* important
Mudhead: are you getting thay Director Ashcroft?
Dexter-Parking-was-easy-Cable's-still a heartbreak-Fong: The sting is the Ray-son detre

Mudhead: Just a plate of Freeedom Brie for me
Dr. Headphones: who is innocent? we're all guilty in an existential sort of way
Merlyn: heh, ok..
||||||||| "11:23 PM? 11:23 PM!!" says Catherwood, "Ludwig Van Ψămąmǿŧo should be here by now...oh, THERE you are!" as Ludwig Van Ψămąmǿŧo enters and sits on the couch.
klokwk-not-dawg: you're saying Innocent III was guilty??
Mudhead: But where would you get Baklava in Guantanimo?
Dr. Headphones: probably more than once, klok :)
Ludwig Van Ψămąmǿŧo: No one is innocent

Ludwig Van Ψămąmǿŧo: I need a good blode for the bending, I do

Dexter Fong: Mud: The rest rooms are behind the bar
Mudhead: cya
Bunnyboy: Dex: Wow, Jarrett! Catch any good groans?
||||||||| At 11:57 PM, the lights go out! Rocky Rococo's voice pierces the inky darkness: "I've got you now, Mudhead!" Shattering glass is heard, and then the lights come back on...
Dexter Fong: Hello Bunny X...and welcome to Toys in the Addict
Bunnyboy: nite Richard. Oh, he's already gone.
Dr. Headphones: ha! good one, dex
Dexter Fong: Bun: He was pretty subdued vocal wise, but great concert, and since I was in first row, orchestra, the sound re-inforcement didn't affect me so heard the entire thing un amplified
Bunnyboy: Daws Butler has been dead for 15 years. About the same time as Mel Blanc.
Dr. Headphones: but not as long as franco
Bunnyboy: Don Messick has only been dead for 7 years.
Dexter Fong: Yes. they're dead now but live on in Steeereo H-Fi
Dexter Fong: soon to be available in SACD
||||||||| Catherwood strides up and snorts derisively "Presenting 'Bubba's Clone', just granted probation at 11:59 PM", then leaves hurriedly.
Bunnyboy: Read Mark Evanier's poignant recollection of Don Messick's last professional days, online.
Bubba's Clone: I hate dialup
||||||||| Catherwood walks in wearing his pyjamas, yawns, and mumbles "It's midnight here in New York city"...then he falls over and starts snoring loudly..

Dexter Fong sings "If you dial me up, dial me up, never get through"

Dexter Fong: Night Ken
||||||||| "Hey Dr. Headphones!" ... Dr. Headphones turns, and sees Bradshaw approching with the handcuffs, and is dragged away, screaming "it's only 12:01 AM, I don't have to go yet!"...
Bunnyboy: Around about 1995, Don Messick, who was a notoriously professional voice artist, punctual, accomodating, decent and all that...
Dexter Fong: Bun: Yes?
Bunnyboy: Messick was at a session, and slumped, and simply said "I can't do this anymore". He left, and went home.
Bunnyboy: His agent contacted his various employers, and told them he had retired.
Bunnyboy: He'd had a stroke, I guess.
Dexter Fong: Bun: Seems like there should be more to the story
Bunnyboy: There was a "retirement" party held sometime later, where everybody who was anybody in the "silver age " voice artist set came to pay tribute to the man.
Dexter Fong: Ah...and it turns out that?????
Bunnyboy: He was Scooby-Doo, Boo-Boo, and a host of others, fer crissakes!
Dexter Fong: Bun: Not questioning his professional credentials, just wondering if he really did have a stroke, or got bored, or had a call from Jesus or what
Bunnyboy: And watching Butler and Messick reminisce, and "dance" the voices around, aw gee...
Dexter Fong: Bun: The term "Silver Age"...does that mean television?
Dexter Fong: As opposed to Golden Age = rADIO
||||||||| It's 12:10 AM, and that means it's time to play BEAT THE REAPER! And here's how our contestants did:
||||||||| Bubba's Clone - dead from jaundice
||||||||| Bubba's Brain - dead from the yaws
||||||||| Better luck next time! And now, back to our chatroom, which is already in progress...
Bunnyboy: Dex: I would guess that the health issues were legitimate. I know that when Jean Van Der Pyl (Wilma Flintstone, Rosie the Robot) passed on, they mentioned that most of the major voice artists from that period were heavy smokers.
Dexter Fong: Wow! A double Bubba wipe out\
Merlyn: well, it's getting late-ish
Ludwig Van Ψămąmǿŧo: yes
Ludwig Van Ψămąmǿŧo: I must away
||||||||| Ludwig Van Ψămąmǿŧo departs at 12:11 AM, singing "Toad away, toad away; toad away, toad away! Where do you go when you're toad away?"
Dexter Fong: Bun: This is not a niche that I have a lotta familiarity with....Old Time Radio I know but not the "voice over crowd
Dexter Fong: Night Yam
Merlyn: bye folks, I'm going to see if I can use a different email-to-usenet remailer
||||||||| At 12:12 AM, Merlyn vanishes mysteriously -- just as Nino the Mind Boggler predicted!
Bunnyboy: I kinda borrowed the term "Silver Age" from comix tracking. Post 1950, and all that. Although, technically, TV's Golden Age would probably be late 40's to mid 50's.
Dexter Fong: Night Merl
Bunnyboy: And radio's Golden Age is...well, pre-Elvis.
Dexter Fong: Bun: It's gotten to the point where at the Old Time radio conventions they are now bringing in TV people 'cause there's so few of the real old time radio people left
Bunnyboy: "Rinso White, and Rinso Bright!"
Dexter Fong: Only the child stars are left =))
Dexter Fong: Actually a lot of the older actors were leftys too
Bunnyboy: Dex: Also, bear in mind that a lot of the pioneer "voice artist" ranks were comprised of Old Time Radio performers, such as Mel Blanc (Jack Benny), Bill Thompson (Fibber McGee and Molly), and such.
Bunnyboy: That's how they got old. Pining.
Dexter Fong: Yes
Dexter Fong: Last OTR convention I attended, Soupy Sales was there...he's not in good shape
Bunnyboy: I gotta crawl away. Wife, dog and wabbits to tend to.
Bunnyboy: Sorry to hear about Soupy.
Dexter Fong: Night Bnny
Bunnyboy: Nice tawk.
Dexter Fong: =))
